Why I Became A Vegetarian?

Why I became a vegetarian? Hmm… I have been avoiding this question for quite a long time now and I think I am ready to share my opinions with the rest of the world. The part about this question that concerns me most is the debates it’s about to encounter. Personally, I feel like I am at a stage in my life where I wouldn’t turn back to being a carnivore. I’ve been an official vegetarian for 8 months now and I am the happiest I have ever been.

Fortunately, I’ve never been a huge fan of eating meat, purely because of the texture, the taste and the whole idea of taking an animals life away. Growing up, I’ve always preferred eating healthier foods such as salads, vegetables and pasta. I like to eat foods that are refreshing. Don’t get me wrong, I have eaten traditional meat in my life and I feel like it was unnecessary. Being a grown independent human providing my own meals, I proudly believe that us humans do not need to eat these animals to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If anything, there are plenty of cons as to why we shouldn’t eat animals because of the diseases our bodies are vulnerable to catching. I am not going to go into the details of this as I do not know enough about it. However, there are proven studies online if you’d like to have a read.

For some reason, when I get asked to put forward my logic as to why I have become a vegetarian, I feel like others take that moment to jump on a band waggon to throw at me counterpoints which are more “validated”, instead of respecting my choices and beliefs. I have had various conversations with people who seem to not understand my logic as to why it’s better for me, but when I state that I simply don’t like the taste, they then understand my reasoning. I’ve gained from this experience, that people do not like to hear the facts, especially when it’s something they like which they then throw pointless comments to try and belittle me. An example of this happening to me is when someone asked for my reasoning and all they did was patronise me by making me feel like I wasn’t entitled to have a choice or an opinion. It doesn’t matter if someone can not justify themselves to your standards as it’s their life and their choices that will affect them and them only. More importantly, the message that I am trying to get across is the arrogance of SOME carnivores needing to recognise these beliefs by respecting the choices made by vegetarians.

I think that some people are very sensitive about their personal eating habits; considering eating is a big component of our lives. I think that it is important for me to share my story as it might help others who have been feeling the same as me, as well as educate those who do not understand vegetarians. There are plenty of other reasons that justify why I have become a vegetarian. However, these reasons are at the top of my list and are not intended to be used in a way to change or manipulate your personal views and opinions.

Harming Animals

The main reason which is an obvious one for all vegetarians is the whole concept of harming animals. I really don’t like the idea of killing harmless animals for us, humans, to use as food. As stated above, I have never enjoyed the whole idea of eating meat which is why I was never a big eater of it growing up. I decided it was time for me to educate myself about the process behind the meat we buy or receive in store which I REGRET 100% purely becuase of how horrific it really is. Vegetarians have proven that meat is not a necissity for humans to live a healthy lifestyle. The way animals are treated throughout their lives right until the slaughtering process is appalling. We should treat all animals with compassion and love to let them live a healthy life.

I believe that all animals should be treated equally and fairly which is why I think it’s wrong how it’s morally acceptable to eat a chicken, but it’s completely unacceptable to eat a dog. I understand that they are two completely different animals, for example, one is a farm animal and one is considered a pet. I dislike the ideology of this because it is wrong to take away lives regardless of whatever animal it is. I think it is unfair how some animals get to live a healthy life until death and some live a mistreated cruel life until they get slaughtered. Isn’t it wrong to take away the life of an animal just so it can be eaten? I could honestly talk about this all day which is why I am going to leave it there.

Healthy Lifestyle & Saving Money

As you are fully aware, I have only been a vegetarian for 8 months now which clearly isn’t a lifetime, but I have noticed some fundamental factors that have helped me in many ways. I can now say I live a healthy lifestyle which can be seen in a variety ways such as foods in my diet (cutting out fatty meats and unnecessary salts), eating enough of fruit and vegetables and ensuring I am eating foods from every section of the eat well guide. Being a vegetarian, it is very important for me to eat food from each food group to ensure my food intake consists of a balanced diet. To make sure I do this, I would often drink/eat foods that are high in soya, so that I am getting that added protein into my body. The-Eatwell-Guide-2016

I have noticed an enormous difference with my weekly food shop to the supermarket. There is a massive cost difference because of the amount of money that I am saving by not having to buy meats. It is a lot cheaper to buy fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice and potatoes. There are a lot of delicious meals that I make to facilitate my diet by just doing everything the exact same, except adding in the meats. I can still make a curry, stirfry and beautiful pasta dishes. It is all about sources and how you cook foods, for example by boiling, roasting or frying. I much prefer the way I am eating now as I actually enjoy cooking by being creative and feeling proud with all the new creations I have put together.

Skin Care Routine

If you have known me for quite some time now, you will have known that I have always had quite dry facial skin with a lot of spots making a home on my forehead. For the last 8 months, I have not had any spot breakouts which has made me feel very happy with myself and has changed my overall mood. I believe that the fatty meats containing a lot of salts encouraged the breakout of spots on my face as since I’ve became a vegetarian, they have all been under control. As well as not eating meat, I am very cautious with the skin care products I am using. Everything that I use is from The Body Shop, including my makeup, shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and perfume. This is because all their products are vegan-friendly and do not include any bad substances for your skin which help to prevent spots. If you were to make these changes, it might change your skin type for the better.

    1. I found it so easy and I have gotten a lot confident because of it. There are plenty of delicious foods out there which do not need meat with them. Even restaurants have a lot more to offer as vegetarians are very popular x

  1. Great article. I am a vegan (plant based diet more) and I have been feeling great since I started back in January. I went vegan as I had some serious stomach issues and the pills that I was taking weren’t agreeing the meat I was eating.
    I observed that going vegan reduced my stomach pain. I have also saw an improvement in my mental health, and since then I read a few books and saw a few documentaries related to this new lifestyle. Some documentaries I can recommend are: What the health, Forks over knives, Food inc, and I from the bottom of my heart (and brain) can recommend the book How Not to Die written by Dr. Michael Greger.
    Please, stay true to your feelings, never change because of someone else says so.
    Animals should never be killed for food, people don’t need meet to survive.
    PS: If you ever crave a burger, I can recommend the No bull Burger from Iceland πŸ™‚

    1. This is amazing. I am so pleased that you approve of my post. I am so happy with myself and I feel a lot better and more confident. I will never go back to eating meat. I have half vegan and half vegetarian lol I only eat cheese. Every other dairy product that i buy is vegan πŸ’•

  2. OMG GIRL. This is such a good post and it’s so true. I’m a vegetarian too. Two and a half years now for me. It’s so frustrating when people can’t face the facts so they try to make you feel like feel you’re the crazy one. Great post.
