Introduce yourself, why did you start blogging?

I was inspired by Kony of New York on Facebook. The content was so real and so raw. I’m a health science major and I really started getting into health in undergrad because of it. I wondered if I could mush the ideas together and create something of my own. It’s evolved into something very original and heartfelt. I never imagined I would have made it this far with blogging.

How did you come up with your blog name?

50 Shades of Humanity was inspired by the idea humans and our experiences lie on a wide spectrum and it is never black or white. We all struggle to varying degrees and have different stories to tell.

What type of content do you generally post on your blog?

All my content is health and wellness related, but I use the 7 dimensions of wellness which gives me a larger area of content I can tackle. The 7 dimensions of wellness include physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental and Occupational wellness. It shows how total health and wellness is best accomplished by enriching all of these dimensions.

What are your main struggles as a blogger?

My main struggle would be (consistent) readers. It’s hard to get people to read these days even on topics that are interesting. The people that need to learn about the topics I cover the most are the ones least likely to read, but social media helps a ton with gaining readers so no worries.

What are your favourite tools for blogging?

Google docs saves livesssssss. It especially helps with blogs that have features from other bloggers. You can communicate through the docs, share them with ease, and edit simultaneously.

What is your favourite social media site for interacting with your readers?

Twitter most definitely. I use twitter polls from my blogs and it is how I get a lot of my anonymous submissions.

What is your favourite post that you have written? And why?

MY fave is definitely “Speak Your Vaginal Truth”. It touches on vaginal health, STIs/STDs, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, lubrication, discharge, personal anonymous quotes from several people on their experiences. It really shows the truth and struggles behind being a women and how honesty allows to end the stigma around vaginal health. Check it out here:

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a blogger?

Brainstorm first. Find out your target audience. Find things people fail to speak on that will draw readers in as well as something you’re passionate about. Self-promotion is your biggest friend and don’t get hung up on readers too early it takes time.

YouTube Video: [ASMR] Dark & Relaxing Tapping & Scratching [Close Whispers] (2018)

Have you ever felt the hairs on your arm stand up when someone whispered in your ear? Or that tingling sensation on your scalp and upper body when receiving a massage or head rub? Well then, you could potentially have experienced the effects of ASMR. ASMR is an acronym standing for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response which is a pleasant reaction to a certain stimulus, known commonly as a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck (Gibi ASMR, 2018a).

Gibi ASMR is a YouTuber with over one million subscribers who creates a range of ASMR content, including recommended triggers, roleplays, and make-up tutorials which are designed for a worldwide audience (Gibi ASMR, 2018a). Gibi disputes that the most triggered sounds are whispering, finger fluttering, tapping, scratching, and soft rubbing. Gibi experiments with a few of her favourite objects, such as a piece of Cork and an iPhone; all of which have worked on myself.

In my opinion, ASMR videos have therapeutic benefits for mental and physical health which can enhance one self’s positive state of mind. I benefited extremely from watching this ASMR video, as it is relaxing, calming, and helped me unwind from a stressful day. Alongside those benefits, ASMR is created with an intention to help you fall asleep or to enhance your work and/or study time; by listening to a soothing sound to put you in a hypnotic state. Foundational to this, the concept of ASMR is intentionally created to make you feel good.

TV Series: Friends (1994)

Friends is a sitcom, comprised of six young adults, who experience the complexity of life to an excessive degree. Monica is a head chef. Rachel begins her career as a waitress. Chandler works with computers and numbers. Joey is an aspiring actor. Ross is a palaeontologist and Phoebe is a private masseuse and singer/songwriter. Although the storylines to some extent resemble moments of reality, the characters personalities and occupations are highly relatable which creates a family-like friendship group that is desired by many of its viewers.

Friends explore contemporary issues such as, sexism, ageism and homophobia which were problematic in society, during the 90’s. An example of sexism is significantly recognised in ‘The One with the Male Nanny’ when Ross claims to be “uncomfortable” (Favourite Videos, 2016) with the idea of hiring a male nanny. Ross believes that “it’s weird” followed by “what kind of job is that for a man? A nanny” (Favourite Videos, 2016). This scene does not promote sexism, instead, it demonstrates how Ross overcomes his prejudices by becoming aware of his own beliefs and judgements. Although these issues are frowned upon, it is important to recognise that even in the 21st century individuals will show signs of prejudices, especially of different cultures and lifestyles.

Nevertheless, Friends heightens the importance of friendship through the opening song lyrics “I’ll be there for you, cause you’re there for me too”, despite all the regrets, lies and conflicts; they forgive one another because their friendship is more important.

MTB: Bryoni Burns

Hey there,

Welcome to my brand new ‘Meet the Blogger’ series. During this special series, I will be introducing new bloggers every Friday by creating a little profile about them. I am looking forward to this very much, as there are so many great bloggers out there and I think it is a great way for us to engage and interact with one another. If you would like to participate in this series, just give me a little message either on my social media or via email, so that I can send you the relevant documents. What’s a better way to start this series off than by myself answering these questions, so you can find out a little bit about me.

Q1. Introduce yourself, why did you start blogging?

Hey there, my name is Bryoni and I am 21-years-old. I am a full-time university student who loves blogging, photography, travelling and fashion. I started this little blog in April 2018 which was only 6 months ago. I wanted to create a space for all my random outbursts, my travel diaries, my top picks and my favourite fashion statements. Ever since my friend and I stopped making YouTube videos together, I realised that I just loved engaging and interacting with people all over the world, that have similar interests as me. I love being a part of the blogging community because it is so supportive and welcoming which makes me happy and motivated to blog about my life.

Q2. How did you come up with your blog name?

Let’s be honest… it’s not very creative. It is just my name with on the end LOL! I might change it in the future, but I am not sure what to. Give me some suggestions in the comments below of what you think I should change my blog name too.

Q3. What type of content do you generally post on your blog?

I post everything and anything. LITERALLY! Whatever is on my mind or things that I want to share, then I just will share it. It is generally a lifestyle blog about everything I am interested in. I share anything from beauty, fashion, travel and photography. I am not sure if I will ever just focus on one thing because my mind is normally all over the place. I love working on different things and keeping myself busy. Let me know what posts you think I should write about.

4. What are your main struggles as a blogger?

My main struggle is definitely fitting it time to actually write my blog posts. I wish there were more hours in a day. I work part-time and I am studying full-time too. It is difficult having to work out time to plan, write, take photos and publish a post. I feel like I am managing it ok at the moment as I am strongly motivated and very much dedicated. Posts are always published every Wednesday and Sunday at 6pm.

Q5. What are your favourite tools for blogging?

Of course, WORDPRESS…. without that I would not have a blog. I 100% recommend using WordPress if you are wanting to become a blogger or even to create a website. It is so easy to use, great for themes and just generally a pleasure to work with. Everyone who is taking part in this series will agree that Google Docs. is also wonderful. It is perfect for saving your drafts, as well as if you are sharing files with other bloggers. It is very easy to use and saves a lot of time.

Q6. What is your favourite social media site for interacting with your readers?

Definitely Twitter! It is a great way to share your posts with readers as well as access posts of other bloggers. I love following bloggers and supporting each other too. I also find that Twitter is amazing for creating polls which are great, especially for getting your readers to interact with you. I often do polls about what types of posts people would like to see or just to get opinions across.

Q7. What is your favourite post that you have written? and why?

Hmm… This is a tricky one. I haven’t actually thought about this before. I don’t even know. Ok, I haven’t been able to decide on just one so I have chosen two. This is because they are both completely different and I loved writing them for different reasons. The first one is: Why I became a Vegetarian? and the second one is: 10 Things You Must Do When Visiting Budapest. I loved writing about why I became a vegetarian as a lot of you were asking me questions about it and when I created a poll on Twitter, it had the most votes. I really enjoyed talking about this subject matter as I feel like it is important to express our views and opinions. I also loved writing about my little holiday to Budapest with my friends. It was just so wonderful and I had the best time ever. I absolutely love my friends so much. It is definitely a holiday that I will always remember forever, probably because we legit got locked in the escape room LOL.

Q8. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a blogger?

JUST GO FOR IT!!! If you have a couple ideas or topics that you want to discuss then great. Just dive straight in and start writing. I had always thought about blogging but was so nervous to do it which is why it took me a long time to start. If you need any help or guidance, you can always ask me and if I don’t know the right answer, I will try to point you in the right direction. The blogging community is always so friendly that whenever I have ever had a problem, there is always someone to help.  If you decide to create a blog after this, then please let me know as I would love to include you in my series as well as check out your blog.

That’s about it from me. If you would like to participate, please contact me either by social media or via email. I look forward to hearing from you. The moment I have been waiting for… let’s get this series started!
